Medical Entomology and Vector Control

Department of Medical Entomology and Vector Control (MEVC)

Welcome from the head of the department

Dear students/applicants,

You are cordially invited to join our faculty, staff, and current undergraduate and postgraduate students in School of Health, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), Shiraz, Iran. Upon admission to our department, you will enjoy the opportunity to promote your knowledge and experiences in educational, research, and technological development as well as in implementation and evaluation of field- and laboratory-based practices to enhance and procure health standards in the field of Vector-Borne Diseases (VBDs) and effectively improve community health through joint ventures. Academic staff in our department come from various scientific disciplines, including molecular, taxonomic, toxicological, biotechnological, and forensic entomology. Our research interests encompass a wide area of medically-important issues, such as zoonoses, endemic VBDs, epidemiology of infectious VBDs, immune-pathology of VBDs, venomous arachnids, myiases, maggot therapy, etc. Faculty staff commonly supervise research proposals providing venues for student involvement in activities leading to patents, ISI papers, and inventions. We thus welcome your early application. Every year, national and international congresses on VBDs are held in our country within which you can share and publicize your ideas and research agenda. Following graduation, you will benefit from excellent job opportunities to engage in, including private entrepreneurships, governmental agencies, health-associated institutions and networks, etc.

The MEVC group was established as an official department in the chart of School of Health, SUMS in 1992. Its educational and research collaboration with other schools within SUMS were simultaneously started. The M.Sc. degree program began in 2007 and more than 50 students have been graduated so far. The B.Sc. degree course was initiated in 2016 with more than 30 students. Finally, the PhD program was started in 2017 with four students. The Department of MEVC is the second most prominent faculty in Iran.

A remarkable number of known endemic diseases in Iran are transmitted by arthropods. Despite the measures adopted in the last few decades to eliminate and/or diminish parasite reservoirs, no other disease than Guinea Worm Disease could by far be eradicated. Considering the twelfth Act of the 43rd law of Islamic Republic of Iran’s constitution regarding community health, there is a need to educate individuals who can be actively involved in these fields. The B.Sc., M.Sc., and PhD curricula in MEVC have all been designed to provide this human workforce.

Educational Goals
