Epidimology

Department of Epidemiology

Message from the head of the department

Dear students/applicants,

Welcome to the Department of Epidemiology located at School of Health, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. The department has a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research and has eight full-time faculty members.

Epidemiology is the study of the frequency, distribution, and determinants of diseases in human populations. The mission of the department is to provide rigorous training in the fundamentals and practice of epidemiology, to contribute to the understanding of the etiology and prevention of diseases, and to improve public health through excellence in research.

The department has strong working relationships and academic ties with research centers in Shiraz, cohort studies in Fars province, and Fars Cancer Registration System. Indeed, the faculty members specialize in the areas of modeling for cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, accidents, GIS, and HIV/AIDS as well as in research on other health outcomes. The department offers PhD and Master’s degrees to students from various backgrounds, including general physicians. Our graduates hold key positions in voluntary health organizations, health departments, consultation firms, and managed care organizations and academia.

International students should apply through the following link. The requirement for registration has been provided below:

Incoming graduate students are required to attend the Department Orientation, which provides an introduction to department procedures and program requirements as well as an opportunity to ask questions and time to meet the faculty and staff.

We welcome you to the Department of Epidemiology and hope your experience here will be enjoyable and rewarding. We wish you the very best and look forward to working with you over the next years.

Haleh Ghaem, PhD

Associate professor

History

The Department of Epidemiology was established in January 1975 as a part of the Department of Health in addition to the Department of Health and Nutrition at the Faculty of Medicine of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. The Department of Health accepted students in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, MPH, and Social Medicine. The Department of Epidemiology officially joined the School of Public Health in 1997. It should be noted that Shiraz School of Public Health was the only one in the country to obtain the license to establish Master’s degrees in Epidemiology until 2001. In the fall of 2006, this group was separated from the Department of Biostatistics and continued its activities independently.
